How we built Cloudflare's data platform and an AI agent on top of it

Here's the thing: Cloudflare has put together Town Lake and Skipper, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. A unified analytics platform sounds great in theory, but without concrete details on scalability and cost at production levels, we’re left with more questions than answers. If you’re considering this for your pipeline, check if the prototype can handle your data volumes and performance needs before diving in.

The competitive landscape is littered with established players like Google BigQuery, Amazon Redshift, and Snowflake. What they don't mention is how Town Lake stacks up against these giants in terms of operational complexity and maintenance. If you're already invested in Apache Spark or other solutions, the transition costs could outweigh the potential benefits.

Who benefits here? If you’re a Cloudflare customer already using their ecosystem, Town Lake might offer some integration advantages. However, if you're outside that bubble, the operational burden of a new platform may not be worth the risk until they can prove its robustness in real-world scenarios.

To be clear: the hype around an internal AI agent like Skipper is attractive, but without independent validation of performance, it might just be another shiny new tool that doesn't hold up under pressure. I recommend keeping this one on your radar but hold off on any serious commitments until we see more maturity and concrete use cases emerge from Cloudflare’s deployments.
